The Story So Far…

Mar 12, 2020   //   by Jon Morgan   //   Uncategorized  //  No Comments

Since it’s Humble Beginnings in 2013, Carbon Collectors Pty Ltd have Grown to Become the Leaders in Refrigerant Recovery of End-of-Life Equipment throughout SE and Nth Queensland. A Dedicated, Stand-Alone Business Established to Service Council’s and the Recycling Industries in General, Rising to Meet the Needs of Mandatory Refrigerant Recovery from End-of-Life Equipment at Waste Facilities, Metal Recyclers and Demolition Companies, Struggling to find Cost-Effective Solutions to Compliance Regulation Requirements.

Currently operating at 41 Council Waste Facilities, we cover a lot of Kilometres and have degassed an impressive amount of End-of-Life Equipment, enduring the harsh conditions that come with working outdoors in Queensland. Our Equipment, Methods and Procedures have developed over time, allowing us to Efficiently and Effectively Recover All Types of Refrigerant Gases from a Vast Array of End-of-Life equipment.

Our Collective Figures are Impressive for 2 Small Operators, having Degassed over 90,000 Fridges, Freezers and 19,000 Airconditioning Units, Recovering over 10,000Kg of Harmful, Polluting Synthetic Greenhouse Gases and Ozone Depleting Substances such as HFC, CFC and HCFC, commonly found in Fridges and Airconditioners.

Consider that 1Kg of Refrigerant Gas Deliberately Released has a Carbon Equivalent of 2000Kg, the 10,000Kg we have Recovered so far is a Massive Saving for our Environment, Preventing 20,000,000Kg of Carbon Dioxide from Forming in the Atmosphere and Stratosphere.

Some May Be Impressed by these Figures, Others May Consider it a Drop in the Ocean so Why Bother. Fact is it’s a Legal Requirement for some, and Consumers in the most part consider it a Moral Obligation to Dispose of Their End-of-Life Equipment in an Environmentally Friendly Manner, for the Better of Future Generations. Carbon Collectors Nth Qld on the Move.

Mar 12, 2020   //   by Jon Morgan   //   Uncategorized  //  No Comments

Carbon Collectors Nth Qld recently secured the Refrigerant Recovery contract for Whitsunday Regional Council, adding to their expansive run of Council’s throughout Nth Qld and the impressive amount of End-of-Life equipment they have degassed already at contracted Council Waste Facilities.

Darren and Peter actively seek out new business opportunities within the Waste Industries in Nth Qld, recently adding to the services they provide is LPG Cylinder and Fire Extinguisher De-commissioning. Darren designed and purpose built an impressive trailer-mounted rig which makes safe and effective work of the procedures and risks involved in handling and de-commissioning this dangerous type of End-of-Life equipment.

De-commissioning these types of cylinders has long been a problem for all Council’s with very few Contractors willing to handle them or able to render them safe for metal disposal. Always willing to assist our Council’s in their recovery efforts, CCNQ’s response to this problem has resulted in a solution that excludes the risk to Council Employees and Contractors involved in metal recovery procedures, effectively increasing business opportunities for them, a pleasing result for all.

Ipswich City Council join the Carbon Collectors Express…

Mar 12, 2020   //   by Jon Morgan   //   Uncategorized  //  No Comments

Carbon Collectors are proud to have recently been chosen as the Preferred Contractors for Ipswich City Council. We appreciate their support and congratulate them for continuing their efforts to recover Refrigerant Gases from End-of Life Equipment discarded at their Waste Facilities.

Previously Council utilised their own Employees to Degas End-of-Life equipment, the time taken excluding them from other activities involved in operating a busy Waste Facility. Since beginning our contract in 2019 we have greatly reduced the time taken to degas, attending regularly to help maintain a compliant site, a win-win result for all involved in managing these facilities.

Averaging 50 units degassed per hour, our specialised methods and equipment have been developed over time and vast experience. Carbon Collectors Refrigerant Recovery consider themselves the Leaders and Innovators in Refrigerant Recovery from End-of Life equipment at Council Waste Facilities.

Southern Downs Regional Council now on board the Carbon Collectors Refrigerant Recovery Express

Nov 6, 2017   //   by Jon Morgan   //   Uncategorized  //  No Comments

Carbon Collectors Refrigerant Recovery are proud to announce they have recently commenced operations with Southern Downs Regional Council, carrying out Refrigerant Recovery Services and Gas Cylinder Decommissioning at Waste Transfer Facilities throughout their Region.

Kristy from Waste Management was referred to Carbon Collectors Refrigerant Recovery after realising that SDRC were not compliant with the Acts and Regulations, in relation to the illegal discharge of Ozone Depleting Potential and Synthetic Greenhouse Gases while processing End-of-Life Equipment at their Waste Management Facilities. These daily activities carried out by every Council around Australia can expose Council’s and their Contractors to possible fines and penalties imposed by the Federal Government, and rightly so…

Following discussions with Jon Morgan and a subsequent quotation to carry out  Refrigerant Recovery of their End-of-Life Equipment, SDRC engaged the services of Carbon Collectors Refrigerant Recovery and are now compliant with the Australian Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gases Acts and Regulations/End-of-Life Equipment.

Bordering on the Regions of the Scenic Rim and Lockyer Valley, Southern Downs is a welcome addition to our South East Qld Operations, we thank them for their support and look forward to discovering more of the beauty Regional QLD has to offer, building strong working relationships in the future, and continuing to build our business operations throughout Queensland.

Congratulations to Kristy, Darryl and the Waste Management Team at SDRC for investing in and adopting effective environmental management strategies for their communities.

Carbon Collectors North Queensland Licensee Established

Feb 20, 2015   //   by Jon Morgan   //   Uncategorized  //  No Comments

Carbon Collectors Pty Ltd are proud to announce the establishment of the first Network District Licensee in Nth Queensland. Based in Townsville, Darren and Peter are able to cover regions from Cairns to Mackay and out to Charters Towers.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council and Hinchinbrook Shire Council have allowed  Carbon Collectors to access their Waste Transfer Facilities to provide our services and we appreciate the opportunity they have given Darren and Peter starting out on their new venture, also setting a precedence for other Councils in Nth QLD to consider providing this most important service for their communities.

Darren originally contacted Jon Morgan at Carbon Collectors after witnessing  the deliberate release of refrigerant gas at Metal Recyclers and Waste Transfer Facilities for too long, and wondering what anyone was doing about it. While investigating the potential of doing something positive in recovering this refrigerant and wondering who was already doing it, he found the Carbon Collectors website and subsequently made contact to discuss the potential of establishing a Network District Licence in Nth QLD.

Following  our discussions, subsequent meeting and presentation of the the Carbon Collectors Network District Licensee Business Plan, Darren could see the potential  of becoming the first Network District Licencee in Nth QLD and securing this District for the future, allowing him to eventually break free from his employment and become his own Boss.  Once established with appropriate Training, Restricted Refrigerant Handling Licence, tools and equipment, uniforms, vehicle signage and marketing, it didn’t take long to secure contracts with the abovementioned LGA’s, a great start for his business with the potential to grow into a full-time business over time.

We look forward to growing the business together and realising the potential for Carbon Collectors to expand in the future, as more and more LGA’s decide to do the right thing with the refrigerated End-of-Life equipment discarded at their Waste Transfer Facilities.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Panel of Pre-Qualified Suppliers

Feb 20, 2015   //   by Jon Morgan   //   Uncategorized  //  No Comments

Carbon Collectors Pty Ltd are excited to be accepted as a Pre-Qualified Supplier for the De-Commissioning and De-Gassing of Airconditionners, Refrigerators and Freezers in the Moreton Bay Region.

The Moreton Bay Community  is growing by the day and their Waste Transfer and Recycling Facilities are always busy dealing with the enormous amount of waste being discarded daily by the residents. MBRC have excellent Waste Transfer and Recycling Facilities that cater for all types of materials recycling in their efforts to reduce their landfill.

Commencing operations in December 2014 and carrying out another run in January 2015, we managed to recover refrigerant from 2600 End-of-Life appliances of all shapes and sizes, effectively preventing 170Kg of harmful, polluting ODS and SGG refrigerants from entering our Atmosphere. The Carbon Equivalent for this amount of refrigerant is 340 tonnes/CO2, an excellent result for Council and the Community.

Once again it is a fantastic initiative for MBRC to adopt and we look forward to continuing this most important service on behalf of Council and its Residents.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Preferred Contractor

Carbon Collectors are proud to be associated with Lockyer Valley Regional Council. We have carried out two collections from the 8 Waste Transfer Stations in this magnificent region so far and look forward to continued support from Council and their Residents with this most important service for their environment.

The LVRC Waste Management Team strive to deliver good practice at all of  their Waste Transfer and Recycling Facilities and  the addition of Refrigerant Recovery to their services can only improve their Green Credentials in relation to Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction strategies.

Thanks go to Peter and Melissa for recognising the importance of Refrigerant Recovery in their region and allowing Carbon Collectors the opportunity to provide this service.

Carbon Collectors Preferred Contractor for Scenic Rim Regional Council

Jun 10, 2014   //   by Jon Morgan   //   Uncategorized  //  No Comments

Carbon Collectors are proud to announce that we were recently awarded a 12 month contract after being chosen as the successful tender by Scenic Rim Regional Council. We are very pleased to have been chosen and look forward to building a strong working relationship, servicing the seven Waste Transfer Stations located throughout the Region. It’s fantastic to see another QLD Council taking the initiative to recover refrigerant from the End-of-Life equipment discarded by its’ Residents, although it’s nothing new for Scenic Rim Regional Council, having previously engaged a Contractor to carry out this work when required.

The Scenic Rim is a truly magnificent part of SE QLD as I recently discovered while driving around checking out all the Council Waste Transfer Stations, a region which has a fast growing population which ultimately means more waste to landfill, so it’s important that recycling is the first thing on everyone’s minds when it comes to discarding unwanted items. Although the overall number of End-of-Life appliances being discarded in the Region are not high at present in comparison to the GCCC, there is no doubt that the numbers will increase in-line with the population growth.

We believe it’s very important that all Local Councils Australia wide should be undertaking refrigerant recovery from End-of-Life Equipment discarded at their Waste Transfer Stations. Recovering these harmful polluting gases is a fantastic thing for our environment, besides the fact that it is illegal to knowingly discharge refrigerant gas from any type of refrigerated equipment, End-of-Life or not.

Gold Coast City Council Vendor Status.

May 2, 2014   //   by Jon Morgan   //   Uncategorized  //  No Comments

Carbon Collectors are proud to announce our association with Gold Coast City Council, having recently been accepted as a Vendor. Ian Aves from Gold Coast City Council has been instrumental in establishing a refrigerant recovery team within the Council and they have been actively recovering refrigerant from end-of-life refrigerated appliances discarded by the public at all of their Waste Recycling Centres. Due to the overwhelming demand at these facilities, Carbon Collectors will be operating in conjunction with their recovery team, predominantly recovering refrigerant from split system condensing units and RAC type airconditioning systems.

In our first 10 days of operation across 6 of their facilities we recovered a total of 125Kg of Ozone Depleting and Synthetic Greenhouse Gases HCFC R22, CFC R12, HFC R410A and HFC R134A from 408 appliances, this brings our current refrigerant recovered total to 225Kg from 1123 Appliances since commencing operations, preventing the equivalent of up to 450 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide from entering our atmosphere.

Some of these recycling facilities average 80 fridges per week, as well as other types of split, mobile and window type airconditioning systems and refrigerated water-coolers are also popular discarded items. It is pleasing to see that most discarded appliances still have their refrigerant charge intact, which shows that people are aware and doing the right thing when it comes to disconnection, transportation and disposal of their refrigerated end-of-life appliances.

All split system type airconditioning systems should have their gas charge recovered by a qualified person before disconnection of the pipework, if recovery is not achievable then the system must be “pumped-down” so that all of the refrigerant is trapped into the outdoor condensing unit, a procedure which should also be carried out by a qualified person. It is illegal for anyone to deliberately discharge refrigerant gases to the atmosphere and heavy fines apply to those convicted of such unlawful and environmentally damaging acts.

Carbon Collectors can provide these recovery or pump-down de-commissioning services affordably and professionally in your home or at your workplace. Our qualified and licensed technicians will effectively remove all refrigerant from your end-of-life equipment and carry out disconnection of the pipework, including removal of equipment from site if required.
